David Luiz is on his way back to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea confirmed the signing of the Brazilian minutes after the transfer window closed, the defender making a stunning return to the Blues two years after he departed west London for Paris Saint-Germain.

Neither club disclosed a transfer fee, though reports suggest Chelsea paid something in the realm of £34 million to £38 million.

"I'm delighted to return to Chelsea. We had a fantastic story during my first time at the club and I want to help the team and Antonio Conte achieve a lot of success," said Luiz, who signed a three-year contract.

"I always had a wonderful relationship with the fans and I am looking forward to wearing the blue shirt at Stamford Bridge once again."

The unforeseen move, which seems to have materialised entirely on Wednesday, is Chelsea's second marquee defensive signing in a matter of hours, as the Blues announced earlier in the day that left-back Marcos Alonso has made the move from Fiorentina.

Antonio Conte had struggled during the window to lure the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Alessio Romagnoli to west London, but the fiery bench boss will indeed get the defensive reinforcements he so desired.

The Brazilian, 29, moved to the Parc des Princes in 2014 for a fee that is thought to have reached £50 million, and went on to capture a slew of titles with the French giant. But the presence of compatriots Thiago Silva and Marquinhos means Luiz, who has featured in all of the club's matches thus far this season, faced stern competition for a starting role.

The ball-playing central defender figures to slot directly into Chelsea's backline, likely displacing the ageing John Terry and Gary Cahill.
