Mario Balotelli's search for a new club has sensationally brought him to Switzerland, as a move back to Italy now appears to be unlikely.

With his career prospects at a new low, the 26-year-old is considering joining FC Sion on loan, according to the Guardian.

Sion's president, Christian Constantin, confirmed that negotiations are currently ongoing between the Swiss outfit and Liverpool.

"I can confirm we're discussing about a possible loan of Balotelli," Constantin told Ticinonews, as translated by the Guardian. "We're progressing but I can't say yet if the transfer will be successful or not."

The sheer dearth of options highlights just how far Balotelli has fallen. The former Manchester City and AC Milan striker drew concrete interest from the likes of Sampdoria and Serie A newcomer Crotone earlier this summer, while overachieving Sassuolo entertained the idea of signing the controversial Italian.

But neither Sampdoria nor Crotone have submitted official bids, and Sassuolo failed to reach an agreement over a fee.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp urged Balotelli to find a new team in July, after sitting down with the player to explain he has no future on Merseyside.

Balotelli has scored just two league goals over the past two seasons, the last of which he spent on loan at Milan. A groin injury limited his appearances during his second go with the Rossoneri.

Despite his poor performances, his behaviour hasn't proven an issue.

Balotelli - who's been training with the Liverpool reserves - has just one year remaining on his contract.
