Germany captures 1st Olympic gold in women's soccer

Germany is finally atop the Olympic podium in women's soccer.

The Germans, who captured three consecutive bronze medals from 2000 to 2008, tasted gold for the first time Friday, topping Sweden 2-1 at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

Silvia Neid's side got the party started with a stunning tally from superstar Dzsenifer Marozsan in the 48th minute, the 24-year-old curling a sumptuous strike into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

When Linda Sembrant scored an unfortunate own goal to double Germany's advantage in the 62nd minute, the Swedes, who came into the final on the strength of a stingy backline while struggling to consistently craft chances, looked in serious trouble.

To their credit, Stina Blackstenius' tally five minutes later provided Pia Sundhage and company with a lifeline, giving Sweden the impetus to push forward in search of an equalizer.

But Germany, ranked second in the world, held firm defensively and, in truth, looked comfortable in the latter stages of the contest en route to victory.

Twice the Women's World Cup champion, Germany now has a set of gold medals to add to its impressive trophy collection.

A perfect send-off for Neid, as the victory was her final match in charge of the team after 11 years on the touchline.
