Neymar scores fastest goal in Olympic soccer history

Looking to get his country to the gold-medal match at Rio 2016, Neymar delivered. Immediately.

The Brazilian superstar was jeered earlier in the tournament as the host nation sputtered out of the gate, but is now in full flight, opening the scoring after just 15 seconds in Wednesday's semifinal against Honduras with a goal that sent the partisan crowd into raptures and made history.

The goal is the fastest in Olympic history, as the Barcelona attacker pounced on a defensive error to bumble the ball over the line. The tally tops the previous record of 20 seconds, which was set earlier at Rio 2016 by Janine Beckie of the Canadian women's national team.

For a moment, though, it wasn't all jubilation for the Brazilians.

Neymar was stretchered off the pitch while holding his chest immediately after scoring, having clattered into the goalkeeper and requiring treatment. Thankfully for the host nation, the Selecao captain trotted back into the action moments later.

Brazil, a silver medalist three times at the Olympics, is looking to capture its first-ever gold in men's soccer.
