Cowboys' Prescott shines in preseason debut

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys might be able to call off their search for a backup quarterback.

Fourth-rounder Dak Prescott started the club's preseason opener Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams in place of Tony Romo, and looked like a seasoned veteran.

The former Mississippi State standout put together an almost unbelievable stat line during the first half of the game. He completed 10-of-12 attempts (with one a horrible drop) for 139 yards and two touchdown passes, finishing with a 154.5 passer rating.

Not quite perfect, but almost.

Prescott was viewed as a talented prospect, but one that was best suited to sitting for several years and refining his technique.

And while there's no chance he will unseat Romo, the young passer showed the type of poise and arm talent that should help the Cowboys feel comfortable with him under center if Romo is again lost to injury.

Having the starting offensive line and superstar wideout Dez Bryant to aid him was definitely an advantage, but Prescott's game was above and beyond anything the Cowboys could have hoped for.

Dallas was forced to watch its 2015 season spiral into disaster because of the substandard veteran quarterbacks brought in to replace the twice-injured Romo. Now, the Cowboys might have a legitimate Plan B.

Yes, it's the preseason. And yes, it's just one game. But Prescott is one injury away from leading a playoff-hopeful team, and based on his performance against the Rams, he could be able to keep the Cowboys in the hunt.
