Elaine Thompson is the fastest woman on the planet.

The Jamaican standout sprinter dethroned her legendary compatriot, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, in the women's 100m final Saturday at Olympic Stadium, winning gold with a time of 10.71 seconds.

The two-time defending champion Fraser-Pryce came third, failing in her quest to become the first woman in history to win three consecutive individual titles at the Summer Olympics.

Jamaica now owns the last three 100m titles, and has won a medal in the event at every Olympics since 1992.

Tori Bowie of the United States took silver, while her teammate, English Gardner, broke the threshold seventh.
