Eagles' Wentz suffered hairline fracture in ribs, may miss rest of preseason

The Philadelphia Eagles' prized second overall draft pick Carson Wentz suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs in their opening preseason game, the team announced.

They hope to have the quarterback back before the end of the preseason.

Head coach Doug Pederson said in his Saturday morning press conference that Wentz suffered the injury to his right side in the next-to-last play of Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Carson felt some discomfort and soreness as we began this morning's practice. We decided to limit him throughout the remainder of practice and, as a precaution, sent him for a CT scan after practice," said Pederson. "The scan revealed a hairline fracture in his ribs. We do not know an exact timetable for his return, but we hope to have him back before the end of the preseason."

Wentz was the team's leading passer in the game, finishing with 89 yards and an interception on 12-of-24 passing.

The injury to the rookie will mean increased reps for backup quarterbacks Chase Daniel and McLeod Bethel-Thompson for the remainder of the preseason.
