Djilobodji becomes Sunderland's 1st summer signing for £8M fee

David Moyes completed his first signing as Sunderland manager Friday, bringing in centre-back Papy Djilobodji from Chelsea for an £8-million fee.

The 27-year-old - who spent the second half of last season on loan at Werder Bremen - has committed his future to the Black Cats for the next four seasons.

Djilobodji made just one appearance for the Blues after arriving from Nantes last summer. It wasn't much of a debut, as the Senegal international replaced Radamel Falcao in stoppage time of last September's League Cup match against third-tier Walsall.

He was far more useful to Bremen in the latter part of the 2015-16 campaign, scoring a dramatic 88th-minute winner against Eintracht Frankfurt to stave off relegation on the final matchday of the Bundesliga season.

And Chelsea may very well have made a tidy profit on a player who barely featured for the club, considering the west London side stumped up a reported £2.7-million to acquire Djilobodji in the first place.
