Defending Olympic tennis champion Andy Murray will serve as flag bearer for Great Britain at Friday's opening ceremony, the British Olympic Association announced Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Murray won gold, along with mixed doubles silver, at London 2012, to the delight of millions of Brits.

"This is my third Olympic Games and it is a very special competition for me," Murray said. "I obviously have great memories of London and I am 100 percent focused on winning here in Rio. The privilege of being the flag bearer is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life and will certainly be one of the highlights of my career."

In addition to being the defending gold medalist in tennis, Murray is the World No. 2 player and the reigning Wimbledon champion, a title he earned less than a month ago.
