Fantasy: 14-team mock draft

Get ready for your season with theScore's 2016 Fantasy Football Draft Kit.

Fantasy owners looking for a true test of their skills should be playing in leagues with 14 teams or more. The bigger the league, the tougher it becomes to build your roster and a greater emphasis has to be placed on bench players in an effort to survive the inevitable attrition of the season.

Our staff took part in a 14-team mock draft over email last week, prior to the news of Le'Veon Bell's suspension and Josh Gordon's reinstatement, but we'll address those picks when we get there.

This is a standard (non-PPR) scoring league with the following roster spots: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, DEF, K, BN, BN, BN, BN.

Draft Participants: Dan Wilkins, Josh Ghatak, David P. Woods, Josh Wegman, Justin Boone, Ken Conrad, Michael McClymont, Jason Wilson, Caitlyn Holroyd, David Chernish, Mitch Sanderson, Esten McLaren, Joe Thomson, Gino Bottero

Round 1

Pick Player Owner
Antonio Brown (WR1) Wilkins
Le'Veon Bell (RB1) Ghatak
Odell Beckham Jr. (WR2) Woods
Julio Jones (WR3) Wegman
Todd Gurley (RB2) Boone
Adrian Peterson (RB3) Conrad
Ezekiel Elliott (RB4) McClymont
DeAndre Hopkins (WR4) Wilson
David Johnson (RB5) Holroyd
Dez Bryant (WR5) Chernish
Rob Gronkowski (TE1) Sanderson
Jordy Nelson (WR6) McLaren
Allen Robinson (WR7) Thomson
A.J. Green (WR8) Bottero

Round 1: The first round of this draft was over before news of Bell's suspension came down. I suspect Bell would have fallen to the late second or early third round had it been known ... For the second straight mock, Elliott goes ahead of David Johnson. Both players are elite talents in excellent situations, and they'll be a hotly debated first-round topic all summer ... It was stunning to see Green fall to the bottom of the opening round. Green faces little competition for targets in Cincy this season, setting him up for a career year. He's the fourth WR in our 2016 rankings.

Round 2

Pick Player Owner
Lamar Miller (RB6) Bottero
Mike Evans (WR9) Thomson
Alshon Jeffery (WR10) McLaren
Jamaal Charles (RB7) Sanderson
Devonta Freeman (RB8) Chernish
Doug Martin (RB9) Holroyd
Brandon Marshall (WR11) Wilson
T.Y. Hilton (WR12) McClymont
Mark Ingram (RB10) Conrad
Keenan Allen (WR13) Boone
Amari Cooper (WR14) Wegman
Eddie Lacy (RB11) Woods
Brandin Cooks (WR15) Ghatak
LeSean McCoy (RB12) Wilkins

Round 2: No surprises in the second round, with the exception of Hilton going as a top-12 receiver. The return of a healthy Andrew Luck could help Hilton warrant this mid-second-round draft slot ... With all the star power early in the draft, and all the optimism that exists this time of year, it's interesting to step back and think that some of the players in this round are guaranteed to bust. It's inevitable. Running backs like Freeman, Charles, Martin, and Lacy face the biggest risk.

Round 3

Pick Player Owner
Kelvin Benjamin (WR16) Wilkins
Sammy Watkins (WR17) Ghatak
C.J. Anderson (RB13) Woods
Thomas Rawls (RB14) Wegman
Demaryius Thomas (WR18) Boone
Jeremy Maclin (WR19) Conrad
Latavius Murray (RB15) McClymont
Matt Forte (RB16) Wilson
Julian Edelman (WR20) Holroyd
Carlos Hyde (RB17) Chernish
Jarvis Landry (WR21) Sanderson
Jordan Matthews (WR22) McLaren
Aaron Rodgers (QB1) Thomson
Randall Cobb (WR23) Bottero

Round 3: Watkins' draft stock dropped earlier in the offseason as he dealt with a foot injury, but with his recovery progressing well, his ADP is back on the rise ... Most teams took a balanced approach in the first three rounds. Team McLaren and Team Thomson were the only owners to avoid running back completely, with the latter making a very early play for a quarterback. You can make an argument that top quarterbacks are more valuable in larger leagues, but with the value available deep in the draft, I would much prefer to wait on the position.

Round 4

Pick Player Owner
Jordan Reed (TE2) Bottero
Dion Lewis (RB18) Thomson
Jeremy Langford (RB19) McLaren
Michael Floyd (WR24) Sanderson
Golden Tate (WR25) Chernish
Greg Olsen (TE3) Holroyd
Doug Baldwin (WR26) Wilson
Eric Decker (WR27) McClymont
Emmanuel Sanders (WR28) Conrad
Larry Fitzgerald (WR29) Boone
Donte Moncrief (WR30) Wegman
John Brown (WR31) Woods
Allen Hurns (WR32) Ghatak
Jonathan Stewart (RB20) Wilkins

Round 4: There was excellent value in the fourth round, with Floyd, Moncrief, and Brown being the most noteworthy selections. It's important not to be a slave to ADP, instead look at where you think a player should be ranked at their position and compare it to how the draft is progressing. I have Floyd ranked as WR20, Moncrief as WR21, and Brown as WR27, so drafting them as the WR24, WR30, and WR31, respectively, is just good business ... Very surprising to see Langford go off the board as the RB19. The Bears have gone on record saying they plan to use the hot-hand approach in their backfield, which means Jordan Howard and even Ka'Deem Carey will share touches with Langford. Even if you believe in Langford, this is still aggressive.

Round 5

Pick Player Owner
DeVante Parker (WR33) Wilkins
DeMarco Murray (RB21) Ghatak
Matt Jones (RB22) Woods
Jeremy Hill (RB23) Wegman
Ryan Mathews (RB24) Boone
Frank Gore (RB25) Conrad
Tyler Lockett (WR34) McClymont
Duke Johnson (RB26) Wilson
Kevin White (WR35) Holroyd
DeSean Jackson (WR36) Chernish
Jay Ajayi (RB27) Sanderson
Cam Newton (QB2) McLaren
Justin Forsett (RB28) Thomson
Melvin Gordon (RB29) Bottero

Round 5: After playing it safe in the opening rounds, this is the point in the draft when you can take some chances on upside players, like Parker, Jones, Lockett, Johnson, and White. Each of them has the ability to far exceed their draft price, and if they underperform, it won't destroy your team ... The Arian Foster signing in Miami broke during the sixth round of this draft, which was unfortunate for Team Sanderson, who took second-year back Ajayi with his fifth-round pick. Ajayi may still emerge as the lead back, but Foster's presence makes him an extremely risky option for fantasy owners.

Round 6

Pick Player Owner
Michael Crabtree (WR37) Bottero
Marvin Jones (WR38) Thomson
Gio Bernard (RB30) McLaren
Drew Brees (QB3) Sanderson
Coby Fleener (TE4) Chernish
Corey Coleman (WR39) Holroyd
Travis Kelce (TE5) Wilson
Laquon Treadwell (WR40) McClymont
Markus Wheaton (WR41) Conrad
Torrey Smith (WR42) Boone
Chris Ivory (RB31) Wegman
Dorial Green-Beckham (WR43) Woods
Arian Foster (RB32) Ghatak
Ameer Abdullah (RB33) Wilkins

Round 6: Team Sanderson's misfortune in the fifth round was Team Ghatak's gain in the sixth, as Foster was scooped up shortly after the news of his signing broke. Foster's role is still unclear, ranging anywhere from a three-down workhorse to the far more likely scenario of an even split with Ajayi, where Foster handles the majority of the passing-down work. If you're brave enough to gamble of the Dolphins backfield, make sure you don't take either player any earlier than this ... Team Woods' decision to wait on receiver backfired, as he gets stuck with Green-Beckham as his WR3. There's still hope for DGB, but the odds of a breakout seem to be reducing each week.

Round 7

Pick Player Owner
Sterling Shepard (WR44) Wilkins
Kamar Aiken (WR45) Ghatak
Andrew Luck (QB4) Woods
Russell Wilson (QB5) Wegman
Danny Woodhead (RB34) Boone
Travis Benjamin (WR46) Conrad
T.J. Yeldon (RB35) McClymont
Josh Doctson (WR47) Wilson
Rashad Jennings (RB36) Holroyd
Blake Bortles (QB6) Chernish
Tevin Coleman (RB37) Sanderson
Michael Thomas (WR48) McLaren
Will Fuller (WR49) Thomson
Charles Sims (RB38) Bottero

Round 7: There's a time when every quarterback becomes a value and at this point in the draft, Luck and Wilson are solid picks. Both are locks for the top five at their position if they stay healthy ... Shocking to see Woodhead available as the RB34. Even if you're confident in a Melvin Gordon breakout - which I'm not - Woodhead will still remain heavily involved in the passing game and the red zone. He finished 10th among fantasy running backs in 2015 (third in PPR).

Round 8

Pick Player Owner
Tavon Austin (WR50) Bottero
Gary Barnidge (TE6) Thomson
C.J. Prosise (RB39) McLaren
Stefon Diggs (WR51) Sanderson
LeGarrette Blount (RB40) Chernish
Ben Roethlisberger (QB7) Holroyd
Isaiah Crowell (RB41) Wilson
Ladarius Green (TE7) McClymont
Tom Brady (QB8) Conrad
Delanie Walker (TE8) Boone
Vincent Jackson (WR52) Wegman
Devin Funchess (WR53) Woods
Julius Thomas (TE9) Ghatak
Derrick Henry (RB42) Wilkins

Round 8: Mid-level tight ends have fallen in all three mock drafts we've done this year. Barnidge, Green, and Walker have top-five upside, while Thomas should be a low-end TE1 this season. Getting them after the 100th pick is awfully enticing and makes you think twice about investing in the position any earlier in drafts.

Round 9

Pick Player Owner
Zach Ertz (TE10) Wilkins
DeAngelo Williams (RB43) Ghatak
Willie Snead (WR54) Woods
Tyler Eifert (TE11) Wegman
Carson Palmer (QB9) Boone
Jimmy Graham (TE12) Conrad
Eli Manning (QB10) McClymont
Tony Romo (QB11) Wilson
Phillip Dorsett (WR55) Holroyd
Kendall Wright (WR56) Chernish
Mohamed Sanu (WR57) Sanderson
Josh Ferguson (RB44) McLaren
Kenneth Dixon (RB45) Thomson
Chris Johnson (RB46) Bottero

Round 9: Williams' ADP is skyrocketing out of the eighth round with Bell's suspension looming. The veteran is more than just the best handcuff in fantasy, he could be a four-game starter or possibly more if Bell gets hurt or has another off-field issue. The only problem is that Williams' price tag is almost guaranteed to become over-inflated ... It should be obvious, but if you're getting Palmer in the ninth round of a 14-team mock draft, why would you spend a third- or fourth-rounder on a QB? ... Team Woods continues to chase receivers, and has cobbled together Funchess, Snead, and Green-Beckham in an attempt to find a viable WR3. Lesson learned: make sure you address the position early.

Round 10

Pick Player Owner
Wendell Smallwood (RB47) Bottero
Jerick McKinnon (RB48) Thomson
Josh Gordon (WR58) McLaren
Breshad Permian (WR59) Sanderson
Paul Perkins (RB49) Chernish
Theo Riddick (RB50) Holroyd
Josh Howard (RB51) Wilson
Steve Smith (WR60) McClymont
Pierre Garcon (WR61) Conrad
DeAndre Washington (RB52) Boone
Darren McFadden (RB53) Wegman
Shane Vereen (RB54) Woods
Philip Rivers (QB12) Ghatak
Derek Carr (QB13) Wilkins

Round 10: If you drafted prior to this week and selected Gordon, congratulations. The winner in this case is Team McLaren, who has a chance to field a Nelson-Jeffery-Gordon receiver trio. Moving forward, Gordon should be approached with caution, but he deserved to be taken in the sixth round or before ... Washington continues to be undervalued. There's no certainty that the fifth-round pick will be able to carve out a job in Oakland this season, but the Raiders seem intent on giving him a chance to at least have a shot at being the passing-down back and maybe more.

Round 11

Pick Player Owner
Rishard Matthews (WR62) Wilkins
Arizona Cardinals (DEF1) Ghatak
Dwayne Allen (TE13) Woods
Charcandrick West (RB55) Wegman
James Starks (RB56) Boone
Seattle Seahawks (DEF2) Conrad
Javorius Allen (RB57) McClymont
Tyler Boyd (WR63) Wilson
Denver Broncos (DEF3) Holroyd
Victor Cruz (WR64) Chernish
Karlos Williams (RB58) Sanderson
Eric Ebron (TE14) McLaren
Bilal Powell (RB59) Thomson
Tyrod Taylor (QB14) Bottero

Round 11: Team McLaren and Team Woods waited until the 11th round before addressing the tight end position and they both came away with high-upside options, in Eric Ebron and Dwayne Allen ... Jumping on defenses in the third last round can be a smart move if any of the elites are still kicking around. In this case they all were, and the Seahawks, Cardinals, and Broncos were chosen prior to the final two defense- and kicker-filled rounds.

Round 12

Pick Player Owner
Stephen Gostkowski (K1) Bottero
Carolina Panthers (DEF4) Thomson
Philadelphia Eagles (DEF5) McLaren
Minnesota Vikings (DEF6) Sanderson
Houston Texans (DEF7) Chernish
Graham Gano (K2) Holroyd
Kansas City Chiefs (DEF8) Wilson
Los Angeles Rams (DEF9) McClymont
Kirk Cousins (QB15) Conrad
Cincinnati Bengals (DEF10) Boone
Oakland Raiders (DEF11) Wegman
New England Patriots (DEF12) Woods
Sammie Coates (WR65) Ghatak
Buffalo Bills (DEF13) Wilkins

Round 13

Pick Player Owner
Dan Bailey (K3) Wilkins
Chandler Catanzaro (K4) Ghatak
Steven Hauschka (K5) Woods
Justin Tucker (K6) Wegman
Mason Crosby (K7) Boone
Blair Walsh (K8) Conrad
Adam Vinatieri (K9) McClymont
Josh Brown (K10) Wilson
Cameron Artis-Payne (RB60) Holroyd
Cairo Santos (K11) Chernish
Brandon McManus (K12) Sanderson
Chris Boswell (K13) McLaren
Matt Prater (K14) Thomson
Green Bay Packers (DEF14) Bottero
