Report: White Sox to consider selling at deadline
On the heels of a prolonged nosedive from the top of the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox are reportedly considering shifting their focus to next year and beyond.
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the White Sox are receiving "plenty" of calls on closer David Robertson, as they decide whether to sell off some of their core assets ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline.
It's the first such indication that the White Sox might be waving the white flag on a season that began with such promise.
Behind the brilliance of Chris Sale and contributions from their supporting cast of starters, the White Sox dashed out to a 23-10 start and built a six-game lead in the Central by mid-May. The strong start even prompted one White Sox executive to float the idea about a World Series "civil war" with the Chicago Cubs.
Things have since gone decidedly south for Robin Ventura's group, with the club compiling a 23-38 record since May 9 to fall 10 games behind division-leading Cleveland and seven back of the second wild-card spot.
Heyman notes that the White Sox remain "very reluctant" to sell, even as they receive calls on Robertston and outfielder Adam Eaton.
