Indians place Gomes on DL a day after baseball 'sacrifice'

The Cleveland Indians' sacrificial ceremony to the baseball gods appears to have completely backfired for Yan Gomes.

One day after his teammates held a mock ceremony to try and help bust Gomes out of his slump, the catcher fell over first base and landed awkwardly, resulting in a trip to the disabled list with a separated shoulder.

"The X-rays showed it's a dislocated shoulder," Gomes told reporters. "There is something sticking out of it right now."

He added: "I thought the sacrifice was supposed to be a good thing."

The injury is just another sour point for Gomes on the season. He entered Sunday hitting .162/.196/.308 with 69 strikeouts through 70 games, but did break an 0-for-27 skid with a third-inning double.

Chris Gimenez and Roberto Perez will likely split catching duties in Gomes' absence unless the Indians opt to acquire a catcher from outside the organization leading into the non-waiver trade deadline.

"It's just, things like this happen," Francona said. "You don't know when it's going to happen, but it happens and, hopefully, you're prepared so it doesn't get in the way of what you're trying to do."
