Manchester United is apparently eyeing the finishing line after Real Madrid limped out of the race to sign Paul Pogba.

Sky Sports' Andy Burton reports Los Blancos have opted out of purchasing the Juventus midfielder because the fee has become so exorbitant that it'd leave the Spanish giant turning its pockets inside out.

The basic fee for Pogba is understood to be around €100 million (£85 million) but, when taking into account performance-related add-ons, as well as the cost of using the player's representative, Mino Raiola, the transfer could exceed €123 million (£105 million).

The 23-year-old Frenchman would also take home a princely sum each week, estimated to be £250,000 for five years.

In addition to the huge sums United earns from merchandise sales, the Premier League's fresh £5.136-billion television deal comes into play this season, giving English clubs the upper hand in the transfer market.

These factors have led Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to step away from negotiations, paving the way for United to complete a deal that should eclipse the current world record transfer of Gareth Bale to his club from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.

A more cost-effective option has been identified by Perez, however, in Portugal international Andre Gomes. The Valencia midfielder, 22, will compete against Pogba in Sunday's Euro 2016 final and is valued at around €50 million (£42 million).
