FA open to foreign manager as Hodgson's successor

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn made no assurances about Roy Hodgson's successor during England's final press conference at Euro 2016, only confirming that the next manager doesn't have to be English.

Glenn apologised for the Three Lions' showing in the Round of 16, where they contrived to lose to first-time participant Iceland.

Assessing the damage is the next step for Glenn, who will oversee a search for a new manager with technical director Dan Ashworth and FA board member David Gill.

Hodgson's contract was set to expire at the end of the tournament, but he took the opportunity after Monday's ignominious defeat to resign immediately.

"We are absolutely not ruling one out," said Glenn. "I am not here to talk about names today but I have been consistent with this, saying we will have the best people in the world to take this exciting group of players with high potential forward.

"We are looking for the best person, not necessarily the best Englishman.

Glenn praised Hodgson for his contributions over the past four years, pointing specifically to England's perfect Euro qualification record as a sign of improvement.

Dismissing reports that the players didn't fully back the manager, Glenn emphasised that Hodgson "built a great team spirit" amongst them.

He added: "When I went into the dressing room last night the scene was of devastation and personal grief.

"Let's scotch that one: it's not about a lack of passion amongst our players."

The repetition of failure on the international stage is something Glenn wants to address rather than focusing solely on Monday's result. England hasn't won a knockout match at a major tournament since the 2006 World Cup.

"I think we need to have a wide consultation. There is not one single thing that we can say, 'If we fix that, it will work,'" said Glenn. "We need to punch our weight in tournaments. We have not done that in 50 years."
