Rooney: I will continue to represent England

Wayne Rooney has vowed to not step away from the England setup after Monday's disastrous Euro 2016 Round of 16 exit to Iceland.

The Three Lions were deservedly dumped from the tournament when the minnow responded to Rooney's early penalty with goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, sensationally booking a quarter-final berth in its first-ever major tournament.

The result marked the departure of manager Roy Hodgson shortly after the final whistle, but skipper Rooney was quick to dispel any calls for him to follow suit.

"It's disappointing tonight, but I enjoy and am proud playing for England," he told The Mirror.

"I'll be interested to see who the next manager is. If selected, I'll certainly be there."

Hodgson was criticised for shoehorning players into an uncomfortable-looking lineup for England's summer campaign, and Rooney was one of his ranks widely pegged for a place on the bench rather than a starring role in the first XI.

But the Manchester United man was deployed in the midfield, seemingly at the cost of the precocious Dele Alli's threat going forward and Jamie Vardy's claims for a starting berth following a 24-goal, title-winning season at Leicester City.

Unsurprisingly, Rooney was sad about the stepping down of Hodgson, who handed him the captaincy in 2014.

"We can't forget he's brought a lot of young players through and I think the future's bright for England," Rooney said.

"Unfortunately it hasn't happened in this tournament but hopefully, in the future there's good things to come and although it's difficult to say and see that now, I think Roy has been good to the players and I'll be thanking him."

Rooney, 30, will now turn to preparations for the upcoming season at United, where he'll work under Jose Mourinho. England's next commitment isn't until September, when it faces Slovakia in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.
