Davis Webb felt he was the better QB at Texas Tech

There's no bad blood between Davis Webb and Texas Tech, but there was a sour taste left in the quarterback's mouth after he lost the starting job to Patrick Mahomes a year ago.

"I always felt like I was the best every single day because of the competitor I am," Webb told ESPN's Ted Miller. "But at the same time that's Coach Kingsbury's decision. And while I may not agree with the decision he made, I respect it."

Webb, who's all but guaranteed to start again as a graduate transfer at Cal, left Lubbock with a strong endorsement from Texas Tech coaches, including Kingsbury, for the way he handled himself after dropping down the depth chart.

Now a member of the Golden Bears and in line to replace Jared Goff as starter, Webb finds himself back on the radars of NFL scouts. The fifth-year senior has been hailed by some experts, such as ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper, as the top senior pivot in the nation, but Webb is focusing more on his critics than his supporters.

"That's a great honor - to be rated that high is very cool - but at the same time, Mel Kiper is not drafting anybody next year," Webb said. "I'm more focused on people who don't think I'm very good. I want to prove those guys wrong."

Webb has been hampered by injuries in the past, but posted 2,539 yards, 24 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, and a 61.2 completion percentage when healthy in 2014. He'll look to regain that form at Cal, where he's currently busy trying to adjust to a new lifestyle.

"I think Lubbock, Texas is one of the most conservative cities in the country. Then you come to Berkeley and it's one of the most liberal cities in the country. People are different in both places. I'm embracing the culture here. The people here are unbelievable."

Cal has a date with Hawaii in Australia to kick off the season Aug. 26.
