UEFA opens probe into Russia for match violence during England tie

PARIS - UEFA said Sunday it was opening disciplinary proceedings against Russia after crowd disturbances in the stadium at the end of the Euro 2016 match against England.

Europe's football governing body said Russia was charged with crowd disturbances, racist behaviour and letting off fireworks and its disciplinary committee would make its decision on June 14.

UEFA added that security for future matches will be increased inside stadiums throughout France.

The charges against Russia include crowd disturbances, racist behaviour and setting off fireworks.

Meanwhile, the English Football Association has not been charged by UEFA over Saturday's violence inside the Stade Velodrome, where a large group of Russian spectators overwhelmed security before randomly attacking fans and forcing many fans with English shirts to flee the stadium.

The scenes inside the stadium prompted an emergency meeting Sunday as UEFA officials re-asses security measures planned for future matches at the 10 stadiums throughout France.

The primary concern was the lack of segregation between England and Russian fans that allowed for the violent scenes to ensue near the end of Saturday's 1-1 draw.

"UEFA acknowledges that there were segregation issues at Stade Velodrome and will implement corrective measures to strengthen the deployment of security personnel at stadiums, in close collaboration with local authorities," UEFA said in a statement.

The sweeping violence outside the stadium, and across Marseille over the past three days, however, will not be addressed by the European governing body.

Russia has previously been charged for fan violence at the competition when Polish security personnel at Euro 2012 were assaulted by Russian fans during a victory over the Czech Republic.
