Van Gundy shares incredible story about O.J. Simpson's Bronco chase
It was 22 years ago that former NFL star O.J. Simpson led police on a chase down Los Angeles freeways, and thanks to Jeff Van Gundy, the world now knows the reason why his white Ford Bronco was going so slow.
Van Gundy shared a wild tale about Simpson's infamous June 17, 1994 chase during Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday night.
At the time of the chase, the New York Knicks were playing the Houston Rockets in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Van Gundy, then an assistant with the Knicks, was told the story by Pat Riley, who got the details from the driver of the Bronco.
Here's what Van Gundy had to say:
That summer - Pat Riley always went back out to L.A., he had a house there - and he ran into the driver of the car, A.C. Cowlings, at a car wash, they both were getting their cars detailed. And A.C. Cowlings knew coach Riley peripherally, waved him over, and proceeded to tell him the story of why they were driving so slow was O.J. wanted to hear the end of the game on the radio before he pulled in.
And when coach Riley told us that story, I was mesmerized by what really goes on. I could just see him having the gun to his head saying "turn up the radio, A.C. so I can hear the last few minutes."
