Report: Cubs won't trade Schwarber for Yankees' Miller

If the Chicago Cubs decide to make a move to upgrade their bullpen ahead of the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline, don't expect the title-starved division-leaders to move injured slugger Kyle Schwarber to get a deal done.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Cubs aren't willing to trade Schwarber - who's done for the year with a torn ACL and LCL - to the New York Yankees for deposed closer Andrew Miller, whose name continues to surface in trade rumors amid the Yankees' struggles.

Schwarber, the fourth overall pick in the 2014 draft, dazzled as a rookie last year after being promoted to Chicago in June, and though Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein called it a "worst-case scenario" when the 23-year-old mangled his knee in his second game of the season, the club hasn't really suffered in his absence. More than two months into the campaign, the Cubs sit third in the majors in runs scored (313) and fifth in park-adjusted offense (109 wRC+), with a left-field committee of Jorge Soler, Kris Bryant, and Matt Szczur (among others) combining for a .788 OPS and 11 homers so far.

The bullpen hasn't been quite as impressive this season, though. While strong performances from the likes of closer Hector Rondon and setup man Pedro Strop have fueled the fourth-best ERA among National League teams, the Cubs' bullpen also ranks among the bottom-five in walk rate (10.8 percent) and HR/9 rate (1.19).

Miller, meanwhile, has been dynamite for a scuffling Yankees club, fashioning a 1.05 ERA over 25 appearances as one-third of New York's vaunted bullpen trio (which also features Dellin Betances and closer Aroldis Chapman). Now in the second season of a four-year, $36-million deal, the 31-year-old boasts an absurd 15.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio with a 0.66 WHIP over 25 2/3 innings as well, while holding opposing hitters to a .156 batting average.
