Report: Xhaka in London for medical ahead of £30M Arsenal move

Granit Xhaka's move to Arsenal appears to be nothing more than a formality.

Multiple reports in England claim the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder is due in London on Friday to complete his medical with the Gunners. The move comes after the two clubs reportedly reached an agreement on a £30-million deal.

Jeremy Wilson of The Telegraph outlines how the deal came to fruition after there were initial discrepancies between the two sides' valuation of the Swiss international:

Arsenal had initially bid close to £20 million for the Switzerland midfielder but, with Monchengladbach hoping to get more than £30 million, an agreement was eventually reached on a deal understood to be worth an initial £25 million but rising potentially to £30 million. Xhaka had a release clause in his contract for £23 million that would have become active next year.

Xhaka, 23, has emerged as Arsene Wenger's top priority in the immediate aftermath of the campaign, and has maintained that he wanted his future sorted out prior to Euro 2016.

Should the deal come to fruition, the former FC Basel star would add another impressive option to an already loaded central midfield at the Emirates, with Mohamed Elneny, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin already established in Wenger's rotation.

With the consistent injury issues that have plagued the club in recent years, though, the 40-time capped international would surely see his share of action, regardless if he steps into the starting lineup immediately or is initially asked to assume a place on the bench.

Xhaka, described as a "young Bastian Schweinsteiger" in 2012 by Ottmar Hitzfeld, would also alleviate the losses of Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky; the former is all but certain to retire, while the latter pair will be leaving the club this summer after the expiration of their respective contracts.

The deal is expected to be formally announced next week.
