White: McGregor-Mayweather rumors just a tabloid story
UFC president Dana White has addressed the absurd rumor of an impending Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather bout after a report from The Sun went viral.
Though most media outlets recognized the rumor for what it was - a fabricated story designed to generate clicks - White came forward to bury any further speculation.
"It's not true; it's just a tabloid story," White told Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports. "And as far as I knew, Floyd is retired and he's been on a world-wide vacation and hasn't even been thinking of fighting."
The two combat sports giants have traded barbs in the past, prompting speculation of how a fight between them might go. McGregor is the UFC's reigning featherweight champion, while Mayweather recently retired from boxing with an unblemished record in 49 pro fights.
McGregor's coach John Kavanagh added fuel to the fire when he posted an amusingly phrased tweet referencing the hypothetical bout.
