X-rays negative after Gomez takes pitch off hand

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

Houston Astros center fielder Carlos Gomez is considered day to day with a right hand contusion after being hit by a pitch from Seattle Mariners right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma, which forced him to an early exit Wednesday at Safeco Field.

The 30-year-old let out a loud scream and nearly doubled over in pain after being plunked by an 87 mph offering from Iwakuma with nobody out in the top of the fourth, and continued to grimace as he was examined at first base by a team trainer. Moments later, he walked off the field and was replaced by Preston Tucker.

Gomez, a two-time All-Star, has struggled mightily through the first few weeks of 2016, hitting just .200/.221/.253 (35 OPS+) with no home runs, four doubles, and a 27.3 percent strikeout rate heading into Wednesday's game.
