Eagles acquire 2nd overall pick in blockbuster trade with Browns

Howard Smith / USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft after a trade with the Cleveland Browns, the team announced.

In exchange, the Eagles will send the Browns their first-round pick (No. 8 overall), as well as third- and fourth-round selections in the 2016 draft, a 2017 first-round pick, and a 2018 second-round pick.

In addition to No. 2, the Eagles will receive the Browns' 2017 fourth-round selection.

Presumably, the Eagles have their sights set on whichever quarterback the Los Angeles Rams (who traded up to the first overall pick last week) pass on.

It's a stunning change in strategy for an Eagles team that gave Sam Bradford a contract worth $35 million earlier this offseason, then followed it up by giving career backup Chase Daniel $21 million of his own.

It's clear that new head coach Doug Pederson and executive vice president Howie Roseman, back in charge of personnel after vanquishing Chip Kelly, are prepared to pull out all the stops to find a franchise passer.

Presumably, the player will be Jared Goff or Carson Wentz. And, considering how much the Eagles traded to move up, it's likely they know which of the two will soon sport midnight green.

For the Browns, it's either an indication they prefer Robert Griffin III to either of the top quarterbacks in this class, or they believe they were leapfrogged by the Rams for their preferred passing prospect.

Instead of sticking at No. 2, the Browns ensured they will be well positioned to move up in the 2017 draft to select a quarterback of the future.
