Report: Brown's job safe after Hinkie resignation

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown's job is safe despite the resignation of general manager Sam Hinkie, a league source told the Philadelphia Inquirer's Keith Pompey.

Hinkie stepped down Wednesday in a move many expected would come much sooner. Brown was hired by Hinkie in 2013, and has coached the 76ers - in a perpetual rebuild ever since - to a record of 47-195 through Thursday.

Hinkie's powers were undermined when the organization hired veteran NBA executive Jerry Colangelo as chairman in December. The team is widely expected to name Colangelo's son Bryan, the former president and general manager of the Toronto Raptors, as GM imminently.

Hinkie officially parted ways with the 76ers with a bizarre, 13-page missive to the team's ownership group, that cited, among other things, an extinct flightless bird native to New Zealand, the decline of BlackBerry, and improperly attributed quotes to Abraham Lincoln.

Brown began his coaching career in Australia before becoming a member of the San Antonio Spurs' staff under Gregg Popovich.
