Texas Tech's Kliff Kingsbury on quarterback duel: 'We have two guys that can win games'

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury plans on naming a starting quarterback in the early stages of training camp, but says he feels confident that both Patrick Mahomes or Davis Webb can lead the Red Raiders, if called upon.

"I'm planning on naming a starter fairly early in camp and trying to develop that chemistry with the first team and second team," Kingsbury said, according to Max Olson of ESPN. "Now, if somebody falters early on, we do feel that we have two guys that can win games. So that's a luxury we haven't had."

Webb, a junior, has 14 starts under his belt and shown flashes of brilliance in his two seasons with the Red Raiders.

He threw for 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2014.

His sophomore rival, Mahomes, may boast the thinner resume, but is coming off a masterful, buzz-worthy performance against reigning Big 12 co-champions Baylor in last season's finale. Although the Red Raiders fell 48-46 in that game, Mahomes threw for 598 yards and six touchdowns, as well as one interception.

"I think if you took a poll and asked our players who should be the starter, you would get 50-50," Kingsbury said. "They've had success on the field with both guys. It's a unique spot to be in. There aren't any people taking sides or anything like that."

Texas Tech went 4-8 in 2014, including 2-7 in Big 12 play.
