College football Week 1: Florida State survives Oklahoma State; LSU rallies for win

Matthew Emmons / USA Today Sports/Reuters

The defending champs got all they could handle from the Cowboys on Saturday, but Florida State managed to hang on for a 37-31 win. The six-point margin of victory was closer than any game the Seminoles played last season, with the lone exception their victory in the national championship.

Jameis Winston looked a little shaky in the first half and threw two interceptions in the second quarter, but he found his groove and finished the night with 370 yards through the air. Most impressive was Winston's 28-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that was truly a thing of beauty.

In other football news, Auburn destroyed Arkansas with a strong second half (and a 90-minute weather delay), UCLA scored three defensive touchdowns in the second quarter alone, and Marcus Mariota is still Marcus Mariota. Here is everything you need to know from Saturday's action:

Alabama holds off WVU

It was strange to see Lane Kiffin hanging out on the sidelines with Nick Saban, yet here we are in Week 1. However, this was a bumpy start for the No. 2 team - Alabama only managed to lead by three points going into halftime - but they pulled it together for a 33-23 win over West Virginia. Quarterback Blake Sims was 24-for-33 and played the entire game, even though Saban told reporters earlier this week he might give Jacob Coker some time on the field.

West Virginia could have been more of a threat, but they made some sloppy plays and their chance at an upset slipped away. Also, T.J. Yeldon was unstoppable, rushing for 126 yards and two touchdowns.

Notre Dame gets a boost from Golson's return

He's back: Everett Golson made sure everyone forgot about his year in exile with an unforgettable performance in the team's 48-17 victory over Rice. Golson was 14-of-22 for 295 yards and two touchdowns, and he also ran for three more. It was his first game in 600 days.

LSU rallies from 17 down against Wisconsin

Through two and a half quarters the Badgers looked to be too much for the Tigers. Wisconsin had a 17 point lead and had kept LSU's offense from gaining any momentum.

The tables turned in the second half however, as LSU scored 21 unanswered points to capture the 28-24 victory. Despite holding the lead for much of the second half, Wisconsin gave star running back Melvin Gordon just four touches over the final 30 minutes and that surely didn't help the Badgers' chances of winning.

Ohio State gets by Navy but it wasn't easy

That was close. After a fiesty Navy team threatened early, Ohio State pulled it together for a 34-17 victory over the Midshipmen in early college football action on Saturday.

So, uh, this is not how the Buckeyes thought they would be starting the year. With no Braxton Miller (out for the season after shoulder surgery), they were forced to rely on freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett, who looked shaky in the first 30 minutes, but finished 12-for-15 for 226 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

It did not go well at first: Navy went into halftime with a 7-6 lead. But slowly, it all started coming together for the No. 5 team. Not exactly a dream start, but coach Urban Meyer can keep his season-opener streak alive (he's 13-0).

Highlight reel: Catch of the year? Catch of the year.

Yes, we know, the year just started. But just look at this behind-the-back grab by Nebraska's Jordan Westerkamp.

Todd Gurley makes his case as early Heisman front-runner

Georgia was looking to avenge a 2013 season-opening loss to Clemson and the Bulldogs did just that on Saturday with a 45-21 win thanks in large part to the heroics of running back Todd Gurley.

Gurley rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries, and added a 100-yard kick return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The game was tied at 21 at halftime, but Gurley rushed for 150 yards in the second half as Georgia scored 24 unanswered points.

Aided by the kick return touchdown, Gurley averaged 17.2 yards every time he touched the ball on Saturday and cemented his case as someone to watch out for in the Heisman race this season.

Weather forces cancellation of Florida and Idaho game

Florida and Idaho were unable to get their 2014 seasons started thanks to Mother Nature. A torrential downpour and plenty of lightning caused hours of delays, while the Gators and Vandals only managed one play: the opening kickoff.

It's unclear yet if the game will be rescheduled or if the two teams will go with an 11-game schedule this season, but playing at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday night was not a possibility.
