Mississippi State's Nick Fitzgerald: Competition ongoing
The Mississippi State quarterback competition between Fitzgerald, Damian Williams, Elijah Staley and Nick Tiano is ongoing, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reports.
Analysis:
Fitzgerald seems like the best bet to secure the position after serving as the top backup to Dak Prescott last year over Staley -- a year in which Williams redshirted after serving as backup in 2014. Fitzgerald was much better in his limited showings last year than Williams was in 2014, and Williams had an extra year of experience when he saw the field, implying that Fitzgerald's development rate and upside are superior. Tiano is a true freshman who seems unlikely to win due to his experience level, though he remains a wildcard. Whoever wins should possess considerable upside in an offense that lets the quarterback run often. We like Fitzgerald the most, but anything can happen and coach Dan Mullen has a history of rotating quarterbacks pre-Prescott.
