Former Iowa standout and All-Big Ten second-team recipient Kyle Calloway died Saturday after being struck by a train while out for a run in Vail, Az.

"We are all stunned and very saddened to hear of the tragic accident claiming the life of Kyle Calloway," Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement published on the Hawkeye's official Twitter account.

Calloway was reportedly jogging westbound and moving on and off the tracks when the train belonging to The Union Pacific Railroad struck him from behind, according to The Tuscon News. Union Pacific is handling the entire investigation.

"That was what he did for exercise," Ed Calloway, Kyle's father told Marcus DiNitto of Sporting News. "He liked to run and it had rained the day before and the area where he ran was muddy, and so he was going back and forth across the tracks to get out of the mud."

Calloway saw his role at Iowa grow from redshirting his freshman year, to becoming a regular starter during his redshirt sophomore season. He was awarded All-Big Ten second-team honors in back-to-back seasons in 2008 and 2009.

Former teammates and friends took to Twitter on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning to express their condolences.

The Buffalo Bills drafted Calloway in the seventh round with the 216th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft but released him just under three months later. A second brief stop with the Baltimore Ravens the following year lasted only a month before Calloway was again released.
