Notre Dame's Devin Butler to undergo surgery for broken foot

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler will require surgery after breaking his left foot again, with the recovery time set at 14-16 weeks.

Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly made the announcement during a charity golf tournament on Monday. Butler broke the same foot prior to last year's Fiesta Bowl, causing him to miss the loss against Ohio State.

"It's tough," Kelly told Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune. "(He's) a guy that's struggled both in his life and in football. He had a great semester academically. We really see him trending in the right way, and then to have an injury like that was very disappointing for him. And we're disappointed for him."

Butler does have another redshirt year available, so depending on his recovery, he could decide to sit out the 2016 season and play the 2017 campaign as a senior.

The Fighting Irish open the season on the road against Texas on Sept. 4.
