Houston mayor predicts Cougars romp over Oklahoma to open season

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

An opening-week tilt between Houston and Oklahoma is expected to be a stud, but the mayor of the former believes it could turn out to be a dud.

Houston mayor Sylvester Turner told Mike Emery of UH Magazine earlier in May that the Cougars will beat the reigning Big 12 champions "easily," by a margin of 14-21 points. He added that once Houston takes care of the Sooners, "we'll look for some stiffer competition."

Turner had an opportunity to rethink his prediction when contacted by the matchup's other side, but refused to back off his stance in an email to Eric Bailey of Tulsa World.

"It is not a subjective assessment," Turner wrote. "I'm being very objective. They are just that good!"

The mayor plans to be at NRG Stadium in Houston for the game on Sept. 3, and he's excited about the opportunity for his alma mater to showcase itself on such a big stage.

"What can I say? Houston is finally getting the attention and respect it deserves," Turner said. "Putting UH and Oklahoma together is equal to a championship game. It's a hell of a way to start the season!"
