Nebraska's Rashon Burno to join Arizona State as assistant coach

Rashon Burno is leaving Nebraska to join Bobby Hurley's staff at Arizona State as an assistant coach.

The news was first reported by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

Burno confirmed the move in a phone interview with the Omaha World-Herald's Lee Barfknecht.

"This was about family," Burno said. "If my reputation takes a hit, that’s something I can't control."

Hurley's father, Bob Hurley, Sr., was Burno's high school coach at St. Anthony in Jersey City, N.J. Together, they led the school to back-to-back national championship runs in 1996 and 1997.

"Growing up and playing for coach Hurley, it was a dream come true," Burno told Nebraska's 1011NOW recently. "But you really don't appreciate what you have because you're going through it, now being almost 20 years removed it's had a lasting effect, I can't put words on it."

Burno was hired by Nebraska in May after spending the previous three seasons working under Billy Donovan at Florida, where he helped the Gators to back-to-back SEC Championships and a Final Four appearance in 2014.

Huskers head coach Tim Miles said Friday that he was disappointed in Burno's decision.

"The timing is terrible for everybody involved," said Miles, according to the World-Herald. "It puts us in a bind, but that was never anybody's intent. I'm a big boy. We'll figure it out on our end."
