No. 1 down: NC State upsets Villanova
The first No. 1 seed has exited the NCAA tournament.
Villanova was unable to complete a late comeback and the NC State Wolfpack advanced to the Sweet Sixteen 71-68.
NC State was able to control the tempo for most of the game, dominating on the glass and in the paint. Villanova was unable to keep up from the outside, shooting just 9-of-28 from beyond the arc.
Abdul-Malik Abu and Lennard Freeman were beasts inside for NC State, combining for 24 points while grabbing 12 rebounds apiece. Guard Trevor Lacey chipped in 17, with four assists and six rebounds to round out the Wolpack's offense.
Villanova squandered a solid effort from Darrun Hilliard, who made six threes and finished with 27 points on 8-of-18 shooting. It was a sad display from the Wildcats, who needed to rely on their outside game in order to compensate for their lack of depth up front.
Also, the band went down playing like they were on the Titanic.
NC State will go on to face the winner of Louisville and Northern Iowa in the next round.
