North Carolina's title win was U-G-L-Y

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

When searching for the perfect word to describe Monday's NCAA championship game between North Carolina and Gonzaga, one has to scroll through almost the entire Merriam-Webster Dictionary before landing on the "U" section.

Ugly : frightful, dire, offensive to the sight, offensive, or unpleasant to any sense. Morally offensive or objectionable, likely to cause inconvenience or discomfort.

Yep, that's just about perfect for what the scene on the court at University of Phoenix Stadium was.

North Carolina will walk away as the winner, and after looking at Gonzaga's game stats, that outcome makes a ton of sense.

vs. North Carolina Season average
Points 65 83
FG % 33.9 50.8
FT % 65.4 71.9
Fouls 22 16.8
Turnovers 14 11

Except for the fact that the Tar Heels were equally as terrible.

vs. Gonzaga Season average
Points 71 85
FG % 35.6 46.9
FT % 57.7 70.4
Fouls 22 17.7
3-pt % 14.8 36.2

In a game marred by excessive fouling, both teams were held under the 36 percent mark from the field, and the winning Tar Heels only connected on 4-of-27 attempts from beyond the arc. In fact, Joel Berry II was the only North Carolina player to make a 3-pointer all night, going 4-of-13 from deep, while the rest of the team combined for a hideous 0-of-14 line.

The Tar Heels also missed 11 foul shots, finishing a dismal 15-of-26 from the charity stripe, meaning the national champion missed a combined 34 triples and foul shots in the title game and still won.

A foul-fest ensued in the second half of the contest which took Zach Collins, Przemek Karnowski, and Johnathan Williams out of action for an extended period of time.

With the Tar Heels leading by three in the final 20 seconds, Gonzaga needed a quick bucket, but Kennedy Meeks blocked a Nigel Williams-Goss floater attempt to seal the win.

The Gonzaga star had just rolled his ankle on the previous play, and clearly had no lift on his spinning shot, allowing Meeks to execute the block with ease.

Legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden once said, "I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty." It's a safe bet that Roy Williams will be adopting that phrase after Monday's victory.
