NCAA Game Summary - Massachusetts at Duquesne

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Davis led the way with 20 points and eight assists as the Massachusetts Minutemen downed the Duquesne Dukes, 78-74, in Atlantic 10 Conference action at the Palumbo Center.

For the Minutemen (23-6, 10-5 A-10), Chaz Williams added 17 points and six assists, Raphiael Putney scored 12, Sampson Carter scored 11 and Maxie Esho posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. UMass has won four of its last five games.

Micah Mason led the Dukes (12-16, 4-11) with 20 points, while Ovie Soko finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out. Dominique McKoy added 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss. Duquesne has lost three of its last four games.

UMass shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, including 3-of-10 from beyond the arc, as the Minutemen took a slim lead at the half, 41-40. Duquesne hit on 44.8 percent of its field goal tries and stayed close by connecting on 5-of-11 from 3-point range in the opening stanza.

After the break, the Minutemen shot just 40.6 percent but knocked down 7-of-15 from 3-point distance. The Dukes were better overall from the field in the second, shooting 46.2 percent, but could make only two of their nine 3-point tries. Trailing 72-71 with under three minutes to play, the Minutemen scored five straight points to take a lead they would never relinquish, as they held on down the stretch for the victory.

Despite each team pulling down nine offensive rebounds, UMass had the edge in second chance points, 14-5. The Minutemen bench outscored the Dukes' bench, 30-14.
