NCAA Game Summary - Virginia Tech at Miami-Florida

Coral Gables, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarrell Eddie knocked down a go-ahead jumper with 20 seconds remaining in the extra session to help the Virginia Tech Hokies defeat the Miami-Florida Hurricanes, 61-60, in an Atlantic Coast Conference overtime thriller at the BankUnited Center.

Eddie finished with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds for Virginia Tech (7-3, 1-0 ACC) as it opened up its conference schedule on a positive note. Ben Emelogu chipped in 11 points off the bench while Joey van Zegeren tallied eight points and 10 boards.

Garrius Adams paced Miami (5-5, 0-1) with 14 points, but missed a key free- throw attempt late in the extra period. James Kelly contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, Davon Reed scored 10 points and Donnavan Kirk corralled 11 boards for the Hurricanes, who have now lost two games in a row.

Miami took a 31-23 lead into the intermission after it shot 45.2 percent from the field and limited the Hokies to 30 percent efficiency from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of action.

Virginia Tech fought back after the break by hitting on 6-of-16 attempts from behind the 3-point line. None of the Hurricanes' reserves contributed in the scoring column in the second half. The Hokies trailed, 56-53, with one minute remaining before Eddie connected on a shot from beyond the arc with 46 seconds left in regulation to even the score. After Davon Reed missed a 3-point field goal try for Miami, Kirk blocked Eddie's last second jump shot.

Eddie's jump shot with 20 seconds left in the overtime period gave Virginia Tech a 61-59 lead. Adams was fouled on Miami's next possession, but missed the back end of his trip to the charity stripe. Kirk pulled down an offensive rebound after the miss, but his jump shot as time expired was off the mark.

Despite the loss, Miami enjoyed a 50-43 edge in the rebounding battle and allowed only 12 points in the paint in the contest.
