George Washington holds off Maryland-Eastern Shore 75-71

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) Tyler Cavanaugh had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Yuta Watanabe was 4 for 6 from the free throw line in the final 23 seconds, helping George Washington get past Maryland-Eastern Shore 75-71 Friday night.

It was the season opener for both teams.

The 6-foot-9, 196-pound Watanabe finished 10 for 12 from the free throw line for the game.

Trailing 71-64 with 1:52 left, the Hawks' Logan McIntosh stole the ball from Jaren Sina and sprinted for a layup attempt that Watanabe blocked. McIntosh recovered the ball but missed a short jumper.

The Colonials' Collin Smith grabbed the rebound, but Dontae Caldwell ripped the ball from Smith and dished to Ryan Andino who buried a 3 to cut George Washington's lead to 71-67 with 1:26 left.

Bakari Copeland led the Hawks with 21 points and Andino had 11.

George Washington shot 85.3 percent from the free throw line going 29 for 34 compared to 12 for 14 the Hawks (85.7).
