UAB spoke with Jason Terry about head coaching job

UAB's search for a new head coach has taken athletic director Mark Ingram to an interesting place: The Houston Rockets roster.

Ingram is in Houston to attend the Final Four, and spoke with Rockets guard Jason Terry about the school's vacant head coaching position.

"It went well," Terry told ESPN's Calvin Watkins. "UAB is in an interesting situation, the success they had, but coach (Jerod) Haase's immediate departure left that job open. I have deep roots in the Birmingham community - uncles, cousins, aunts - and so I'm very familiar with the area. So we'll see what happens. It was a good meeting that I had."

The 38-year-old Terry is in his 17th NBA season, and is averaging 5.8 points in 17 minutes of action. He's never coached, but has expressed interest in the profession following his playing career.

"In this business, you have to plan for your post-career," he said. "This is no different, being prepared. You always have to be prepared. Would I like to play a couple more years? Yes. But I have to leave my options open. And if this offer is better than what I have on the horizon, then I'm going to have to jump head-first in it. There is some longevity in it, and it is my passion."

The 6-foot-2 Terry had a storied college career with Arizona from 1995-1999, winning a national championship and being voted a consensus First-Team All-American.

The Blazers are looking to replace the accomplished Haase, who took the Stanford job March 25, and have also been linked with former NBA standout, and current Auburn assistant, Chuck Person.
