Krzyzewski has 'every intention' of coaching Team USA in Rio
Coach K still plans to be in Rio this summer.
Though USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said this past weekend that he was worried about the health of the program's 69-year-old coach, Mike Krzyzewski insisted Thursday that he'll be well enough to coach in the Olympics.
"Immediately after the Duke basketball season is completed, I will undergo replacement surgery on my left knee," Krzyzewski said in a statement. "Our medical team here at Duke and I expect a full recovery following the rehabilitation process, and I have every intention of coaching the United States National Team in Rio at the 2016 Olympics."
Krzyzewski also missed a Duke game on Feb. 2 while reportedly in the heart wing of a Durham, N.C., hospital, and Colangelo initially said the impending knee surgery represented "just one facet of (Krzyzewski's) health circumstances."
Colangelo also said he had begun to consider potential replacements in the event Krzyzewski was unable to coach the team.
He backtracked a bit on Thursday, affirming in a statement of his own the belief that Krzyzewski will indeed be on the sidelines in Rio.
"I'd like to clarify comments I made last weekend in Toronto," he said. "I fully expect Coach K to lead the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team in Rio. I was aware that Coach planned to have knee replacement surgery immediately after Duke's season was completed, but at no time have coach and I ever discussed him not coaching the USA National Team this summer."
