The Miami Heat are trading power forward Jarnell Stokes to the New Orleans Pelicans, league sources told Yahoo's Shams Charania.

The Pelicans confirmed the move shortly thereafter.

Miami's motivation in the deal is to shed salary in its continued effort to duck below the luxury-tax line, ESPN's Zach Lowe reports. Currently, the Heat are $3.5 million over the tax.

Stokes, chosen 35th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2014, has played all of 15 minutes in Miami since being moved in November in the Mario Chalmers deal.

The 22-year-old Stokes profiles as an athletic rebounder.
