Report: Rockets, Hornets discussed deal for Howard

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Rockets and Charlotte Hornets have discussed a potential trade that would send Dwight Howard to Charlotte, but have found no workable deal, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Howard's name has been floated in several trade rumors over the past fortnight, with a report Monday linking the center to the Miami Heat in a possible deal involving Hassan Whiteside. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year has publicly stated he doesn't want out of Houston, but the Rockets appear ready and willing to move him.

Howard can opt out of his contract this summer in a move that would fetch him more than the $23-million annual salary he currently earns. There are concerns, however, of the 30-year-old's production declining: His minutes and scoring both rank as the second-lowest of his career. Howard missed 41 games last season due to a severe knee injury.

It can be assumed the Rockets would need to take back Al Jefferson's expiring contract in a trade with Charlotte in order for the salaries to match. The Rockets are believed to be asking for at least one first-round pick in any Howard trade.

The Hornets reportedly made a move earlier in the day Tuesday, acquiring guard Courtney Lee from the Memphis Grizzlies.
