Van Gundy questions Pistons' fight after loss to Spurs

If Tuesday was a test for the Detroit Pistons, they failed in the eyes of coach Stan Van Gundy. Classic San Antonio Spurs basketball did Detroit in in the second and third quarters, with the Pistons ultimately falling at home 109-99.

"Look, you're gonna have to play a full game against a team like that," Van Gundy told reporters afterwards. "I thought we played about 23-to-24 minutes tonight. That's not gonna be enough."

Tony Parker had a throwback game for the Spurs, scoring a season-high 31 points on 13-for-19 shooting.

"Parker got going on what I thought were four pretty damn easy shots to start the second half where we just didn't work," Van Gundy said. "We got nothing from our starters at the start of the second half."

While the Pistons' weaknesses this season have generally been focused on the team's bench, the starters had an off night Tuesday. Reggie Jackson shot 3-for-13 and finished with 10 points, but still managed to dish out 11 assists. Detroit bounced back to outscore the Spurs 33-28 in the fourth quarter, but Van Gundy sat center Andre Drummond in the last five minutes to avoid the hack-a-strategy.

"Look, they're very, very good," Van Gundy said of San Antonio, in something of an understatement. The Spurs are now 22-6 on the second night of back-to-back games since the start of last season.
