Deron Williams suffers left knee contusion in Mavs' season-opening win

Deron Williams couldn't even make it through Game 1 without getting hurt.

After struggling through a lingering calf injury in the preseason, the perpetually injured point guard managed to suit up - albeit on a minutes restriction - for his first regular-season game with the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

In the third quarter, though, he injured his left knee when Phoenix Suns point guard Eric Bledsoe landed on his ankle.

Williams came out of the game and had to be helped to the locker room, where he was diagnosed with a knee contusion. He did return to the game - with his knee in a sleeve - before the end of the quarter, though he played just two minutes thereafter.

Despite the minor setback, Williams enjoyed a fine Mavericks debut, scoring 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, adding seven assists and posting a plus-16 rating in 20 minutes, as the Mavs rolled to a 111-95 win.
