Pistons likely to waive Granger before roster deadline

The Detroit Pistons made three roster cuts Friday, but with 16 guaranteed contracts left, the writing is on the wall that veteran swingman Danny Granger will be waived by Monday, according to head coach Stan Van Gundy.

"We talked to him last week and he just still wasn't ready to go, wasn't ready to play,” Van Gundy said, according to George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press. "We'll take another day or so. You know, without having him here in camp and stuff, it would be tough to keep him on a roster spot."

Acquired from the Phoenix Suns as a salary dump addition in the Marcus Morris deal, Granger has not participated in training camp due to a knee injury. Owed $2.2 million this season, conventional wisdom all along suggested the Pistons would release the 32-year-old, who has only played in 76 games the past three seasons due to injuries.

However, Van Gundy left the door open for Granger to land on the Detroit roster earlier this summer. Now, yet to appear in camp, it looks like that is unlikely to happen. A one-time All-Star, Granger was considered an elite NBA wing until injuries derailed his career.
