Pistons waive Cartier Martin, 2 others to get roster to 16
The Detroit Pistons have trimmed their roster to 16 ahead of Monday's cut-down deadline, waiving three players, including Cartier Martin.
Adonis Thomas and Jordan Bachynski have also been waived, the team announced Friday.
Thomas and Bachynski were in camp on non-guaranteed deals, and while head coach Stan Van Gundy told Thomas he had a legitimate chance to crack the roster, beating out a player with a guaranteed deal would have been a tall task. Neither player saw much preseason action, with Van Gundy instead opting to employ a rotation similar to the one the Pistons should open the season with.
The Pistons entered camp with 17 players on guaranteed contracts, meaning they were set to eat at least two contracts once the season began, barring a trade. One of those contracts belongs to Martin, who is owed $1.3 million for the season despite being cut. The 30-year-old forward failed to appear in a preseason game due to a lingering wrist injury, sinking his chances of earning a spot.
Danny Granger has likewise missed all of camp due to injuries and actually remains in Phoenix rehabilitating. It's been expected that he'll be the team's final cut, but second-round pick Darrun Hilliard and wing Reggie Bullock could conceivably be on the chopping block, too, despite a strong camp for the latter.
