Report: Mike Miller has 1-year offer from Nuggets if he clears waivers

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Mike Miller is set to be the belle of the sparsely attended training camp free-agent ball.

The Portland Trail Blazers reportedly bought Miller out of his $3.3-million contract for 2015-16 on Sunday, meaning the 35-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent if he clears waivers. With the Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz standing as the only non-Portland teams that could claim his salary, that seems like an inevitability.

Once he clears waivers, he'll have at least one contract offer waiting for him. The Denver Nuggets offered Miller a one-year deal, according to Marc Stein of ESPN, as they continue their search for steady veterans to improve the locker room culture.

Earlier reports had the Memphis Grizzlies, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dallas Mavericks also interested in Miller. The Nuggets have $2.4 million in unused cap space they can use to top the veteran minimum offers of other teams, should salary be a factor in Miller's decision.

While Miller was unproductive in 52 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, his allure is obvious: he's a two-time NBA champion with 94 games of playoff experience and nearly 1,000 regular-season games under his belt. He also remains a competent outside shooter, having knocked down 44.4 percent of his 3-point looks from 2011-12 to 2013-14 before hitting 32.7 percent in a smaller sample last year.

Miller averaged 2.1 points and 1.8 rebounds in 13.5 minutes for the Cavs in 2014-15. In this case, numbers don't seem to measure the impact the affable Miller could have on a team, young or contending.
