Trail Blazers' Harkless sustains ankle injury in preparation for FIBA Americas

David Manning-USA TODAY Sports

Portland Trail Blazers swingman Maurice Harkless injured his ankle while practicing with the Puerto Rico men's national team, says the team's associate director, Joel Katz.

Katz also told Primerahora.com that Harkless will travel back to Portland for further testing Wednesday. The injury puts his availability for the FIBA Americas tournament in jeopardy.

The Orlando Magic dealt Harkless to the Trail Blazers in July in exchange for a highly-protected future second-round pick. Harkless found himself as the odd man out in an increasingly crowded rotation in Orlando, but is now situated on a rebuild in Portland, where he should receive plenty of opportunities to produce.

Harkless was selected 15th overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. After a promising start to his career, in which he averaged 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 33.6 percent from deep in his first two seasons, he saw his minutes trimmed to only 15 per contest last year.
