Sonny Weems is back in the NBA.

The Phoenix Suns have agreed to a two-year, $5.8-million deal with the former Denver Nuggets and Toronto Raptors wing, according to a report from Chris Broussard of ESPN.

Weems, the No. 39 overall pick in the 2008 draft, had a forgettable rookie season in Denver before landing in Toronto by way of the Milwaukee Bucks, unexpectedly carving out a rotation role for a middling Raptors team, and then a larger role on a rebuilding team.

In 140 NBA games, the 6-foot-6 Arkansas product averaged 7.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, shooting 47.4 percent from the floor and 24.1 percent on threes.

Weems opted to head overseas for 2011-12, and has played in Lithuania and Russia in the years since. He averaged 12.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists for CSKA Moscow of the Russian league this season and, most importantly for his NBA prospects, hit 40.1 percent from outside.

The price is a bit rich for a player so far removed from NBA competition, and the Suns appear to have used their room mid-level exception to sign him. The 29-year-old (happy birthday, Sonny) should infuse some athleticism into the Suns' somewhat thin wing rotation.
