The events that unfolded in Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday were nothing short of devastating. It was an unforgivable act of terrorism motivated by racism and pure hatred.

The tragedy left a nation stricken with grief, the latest gash in a gaping wound that refuses to heal. The horrific event shook millions as a collective nation mourns the death of nine innocent victims.

Among the mourners is Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard, who traveled to Charleston to attend a vigil at the College of Charleston.

Pray for Charleston. Pray for our nation. Pray for peace. #breatheagain.

Howard met with the family of slain victims Myra Thompson and Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton. He also appeared on CNN to discuss the tragedy.

"Just broke my heart, because I felt like that could've been me, could've been my friends, could've been my pastor," Howard said. "It could've been anybody. And I wanted to be there to show my support, to show people that we need change in our society."

Howard is no stranger to activism. The star center launched the "Breathe Again" movement, a grassroots effort aimed at easing racial tensions. For more on his organization, visit Howard's website.
