Bucks' Tyler Ennis undergoes surgery on right shoulder

Following an underwhelming rookie season for Canadian point guard Tyler Ennis, his first professional offseason is off to an unfortunate start.

Ennis underwent successful labral repair surgery to his right shoulder on Tuesday following consultation with the Milwaukee Bucks' orthopaedist. No timetable has been established for his return to action, but he had previously committed to playing for Team Canada in the 2015 FIBA Americas tournament and for the Bucks in summer league.

Depending on the severity of the procedure, those plans may be scuttled. Summer league tips off in mid-July, while the FIBA Americas, a 2016 Olympic qualifying tournament, begins Aug. 31.

Drafted with the No. 18 pick in the 2014 draft, Ennis played sparingly for the Phoenix Suns before getting dealt to the Bucks at the trade deadline. He saw more action with Milwaukee but his role remained inconsistent, not uncommon for a rookie point guard.

Over 33 games between the two teams, Ennis averaged 3.7 points and 2.2 assists in 12.5 minutes, shooting 36.1 percent from the floor. He also spent a nine-game stint in the D-League, averaging 18.4 points and 5.3 assists while shooting 47.9 percent.

A steady offensive leader with a conservative but effective offensive game, Ennis could play his way into full-time backup point guard duties for Milwaukee next season. Michael Carter-Williams stands to be the starter, but it's conceivable that Ennis could usurp Jerryd Bayless as the next man on the depth chart.
