Davis' massive night is for naught as Pelicans lose in double OT

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Pelicans had a chance to keep pace with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday.

They could not, losing to the Denver Nuggets 118-111 in double overtime, despite a near-quadruple double from Anthony Davis.

Davis' 2K-like night went down the drain when the Pelicans were unable to get the ball into his hands in the second overtime, a frame in which New Orleans scored only two points.

Tyreke Evans, in his return from a one-game absence for the Pelicans, also came up one rebound short of a triple-double, but missed a three-foot shot as the first overtime expired.

The Pelicans remain a game behind the Thunder for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. To make matters worse, losing at home to an inferior opponent in Denver hurts all the more when you look at New Orleans' upcoming schedule - which features road dates against the Suns, Warriors and Clippers, then home against the Rockets.

Will Barton was the hero for the Nuggets, scoring 25 points off the bench - including the three-pointer that forced double overtime.
